The Hybrid Architect: How Pha Pureemahawong Scaled Agile for a Nationwide Banking Transformation

The PMI Thailand Chapter proudly presents the inspiring journey of Ms. Pha Pureemahawong, a transformational banking leader whose mastery of hybrid project management demonstrates how governance, agility, and innovation can coexist at scale.

A Leader Across Industries

Name: Ms. Pha Pureemahawong
Current Role: VP, Senior Project Manager, Siam Commercial Bank PCL
PMI Certifications: PMP®, PMI-ACP®, PMI-RMP®

Pha’s project management journey spans over a decade across two demanding industries.

She began her career in the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) sector, where deadlines were absolute and profitability defined success. Managing international stakeholders and complex event portfolios taught her discipline, precision, and accountability. Every project had a fixed launch date. There was no room for delay.

Five years ago, she transitioned into IT and banking. She quickly realized that the structured execution mindset from global events translated perfectly into managing high-stakes digital initiatives.

Today, she leads one of the bank’s most critical programs: the nationwide rollout of the New Teller System. This large-scale digital transformation initiative involves more than 200 cross-functional team members and modernizes the operational backbone of branches across Thailand.

Building the “Triple Crown”

In banking, experience alone is not enough. Framework matters.

Her certification journey began with the PMP®, which gave her the language of governance, scope control, schedule discipline, and structured delivery.

As market demands shifted toward speed and adaptability, she pursued the PMI-ACP® to master iterative value delivery and agile execution.

Recognizing that financial institutions operate in risk-sensitive environments, she completed the trilogy by earning the PMI-RMP®. Risk management became embedded in her thinking.

Balancing full-time program leadership with certification preparation required focus and resilience. The result was what she calls her “Triple Crown.” More importantly, it changed how she sees delivery models. Waterfall, Agile, and Risk are not competing philosophies. They are tools within one integrated toolbox.

Designing a Hybrid Architecture

The New Teller System presented a central challenge.

How do you apply Agile principles, designed for small, autonomous teams, to a 200-person workforce operating under strict financial compliance?

Her answer was a hybrid architecture.

Macro-Governance: The PMP® Layer

High-level planning, budgeting, regulatory checkpoints, and Steering Committee reporting followed a predictive structure. This ensured compliance alignment and executive confidence.

Micro-Execution: The PMI-ACP® Layer

Within that governance container, teams operated in Agile sprints. Scrum drove delivery at the team level, while traditional program management ensured integration across workstreams.

Risk Integration: The PMI-RMP® Lens

Risk identification and mitigation ran continuously across both layers. Compliance was not treated as a barrier. It became an enabler.

This model proved a critical point. Organizations do not need to choose between compliance and speed. With the right architecture, they achieve both.

Scaling Innovation with AI and Lean

Managing 200 professionals generates complexity. Clarity requires structure and innovation.

  • AI and Data Analytics: The team used analytics to map resource competencies and match skills to tasks based on proficiency levels. Workforce planning moved beyond static allocation charts.
  • Automation: Testing and deployment pipelines were automated, reducing manual regression efforts and increasing delivery velocity.
  • Lean Thinking: Administrative waste was systematically removed. Meetings were streamlined, reporting simplified, and Agile ceremonies remained purposeful.

The focus remained simple: reduce noise, increase signal, and deliver value.

Results That Changed Culture

In 2025, the New Teller System was successfully implemented across all bank branches nationwide.

The project was delivered on schedule. More importantly, it shifted organizational mindset.

The culture moved from “Compliance versus Delivery” to “Compliance enabling Delivery.”

A legacy banking environment proved capable of agility at scale.

A Leader’s Philosophy

Agile is not about the process; it’s about the people. When we stop managing tasks and start empowering teams to solve problems, that is when true transformation happens.

Pha’s 10-year journey across MICE and banking highlights a fundamental truth. Certifications provide the science of project management. Leadership, courage, and innovation deliver the art.

Inspiration for the PMI Community

Ms. Pha Pureemahawong exemplifies how PMP®, PMI-ACP®, and PMI-RMP® can be applied together to drive transformation in complex, regulated environments.

Her journey demonstrates that structured governance and agility are not opposites. They are complementary strengths when led with clarity and vision.
