From Balance Sheets to Backlogs: An Unconventional Path to Project Management

The PMI Thailand Chapter is proud to feature the remarkable journey of Joel Abiera, a finance professional turned project leader, whose adaptability, strategic insight, and commitment to bridging business and technology exemplify the transformative power of project management.

From Balance Sheets to Backlogs: An Unconventional Path to Project Management

Joel Abiera’s journey into the world of software and project management didn’t follow a traditional route. It began in the world of finance. As a CPA, his career started with auditing branch operations in the remittance industry and later moved into enterprise-level roles in risk management for major financial institutions across Asia-Pacific. But it wasn’t until he found himself translating between business and technology teams on a data project that he discovered his true passion, bridging the gap between strategic goals and technical delivery.

“I loved being the person who could make both sides nod in understanding. That realization changed everything.”

In 2017, Joel and his family took a leap of faith, relocating to Bangkok with no clear plan, just a sense of adventure. It was in Thailand that his career in project management truly began.

PMP®: Building the Foundation for a New Chapter

Hired as an IT Project Manager during the late stages of the pandemic, Joel was thrust into managing a complex e-commerce platform despite limited software experience. Agile certifications helped him manage workflow, but he knew something was missing: a structured foundation to lead projects with confidence.

That’s when Joel turned to the PMP® certification.

By day, he managed back-end integrations, mobile app development, and diverse client demands. By night, he immersed himself in the PMP® curriculum. This real-time application of PMI principles forged his identity as a project leader.

“My roots in finance are my unique advantage. I don’t just see a project; I see the business case behind it.”

Turning PMI Theory into Tangible Impact

Joel’s PMP® journey wasn’t theoretical, it was immediately actionable. While studying Stakeholder Management, he applied those lessons directly to live client projects. Risk Management training led to the implementation of structured risk registers across mobile app initiatives. Lessons in Scope and Schedule Management helped him bring clarity and predictability to a dynamic portfolio.

Today, Joel leads all projects for his organization’s Norwegian sister company, blending PMI methodologies with Agile delivery for stronger results.

Innovative Practices and Lasting Results

Joel’s hybrid approach has led to marked improvements in project delivery and client satisfaction. By integrating formal risk mitigation strategies into Agile sprints, his teams can now anticipate issues earlier and respond faster.

He’s also at the forefront of integrating AI into project management using tools to polish documentation, streamline communications, and sharpen stakeholder reports. This frees up time for strategic thinking, people leadership, and deeper stakeholder engagement.

“This continuous search for better ways to work is the essence of my journey.”

Joel’s story is a testament to the transformative power of project management. From finance to technology, from spreadsheets to Scrum boards, his journey shows that no matter where you start, project management can help you drive meaningful change, and write a story worth telling.
