Traditionally, a project manager is viewed as key person who controls and manages the project successfully by satisfying the budget, schedules, and agreed objectives for the project. In this view project leaders manage projects by focusing on properly defining the work, timing, and resources using established procedures and tools for project tracking and control. However, this approach alone is considered insufficient in light of leadership and team management theories as it ignores the critical role of leadership.
Moreover, IT projects typically deal with cross-functional teams, engage in multiple activities spanning a number of organizational boundaries and are expected to create positive business outcomes on top of traditional project performance measurements. These factors create additional challenges on how to successfully manage IT projects.
This presentation aims to provide insight into effective roles of project manager in leading and managing IT project in perspective of leadership and team management.
Dr. Tawicha Trakulyingyong has been working for global and multinational companies. He has expertise in a number of areas particularly the IT strategy and leadership, change management and operation management. His early career was in the United States where he worked and supported many global firms in roles of technical consultants and account delivery. In Thailand, he has worked in leadership roles with large corporations in banking industry and supply chain industry to oversee the IT strategy, execution and operation. Currently, he holds a senior management position to oversee IT aspects for a group of companies in C.P. International Trading group.
Dr. Tawicha has personal passion on leadership, which he has spent years studying, and researching many leadership theories and how to practically apply in everyday life. His Ph.D. dissertation also focused on the impact of leadership in IT project management.
