Textbooks used to say that project success is to finish the project on time, within budget and with defined quality. This is no longer the case. Today focus is on creating benefits. The project should bring value to their initiators, their stakeholders, and maybe to the society. However, it is not easy, when planning the project, to see all possible opportunities. This lecture will discuss benefits realization and the challenges the project owners and project management face in a changing world. A case study of a bridge in USA will illustrate some of the opportunities.
Erling S. Andersen is Professor emeritus of Project Management at BI Norwegian Business School, Oslo, Norway. He has been visiting professor to University of Tokyo, Japan and Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He was recently awarded PMI Scholar-Practitioner Award. His book “Goal Directed Project Management” is in ten languages. He is also the author of “Project Management – An Organizational Perspective”, published on Prentice-Hall.
Pernille Eskerod is Full Professor of Management at Webster University. She is located at Webster’s campus in Vienna, Austria, however, in 2017 she is spending three months at Webster’s campus in Bangkok. Pernille is of Danish nationality and prior to her current position, she worked many years at University of Southern Denmark. She has been visiting professor at Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, NJ, USA. In 2016, she published the book RETHINK! Project Stakeholder Management (with Martina Huemann & Claudia Ringhofer), based on a competitive PMI research grant.
